Exploring the Gila National Wilderness and Cliff Dwellings

On beautiful deep blue sky day, we drove 45 miles on the Mountain Spirit Trail into the Gila National Forest and Wilderness area to the Gila Cliff Dwellings.  Climbing into the forest with patches of snow, we took a deep breath of fresh high mountain air.  Crossed the Continental Divide at 7,080 ft elevation.  Brad and I hiked the one mile trail up to the cliff dwellings.  It was a sobering and eerie feeling to imagine how the Mogollon Indians lived and prospered in these steep cliff dwellings (circa 1290 AD).
