spring snow in sedona
March 19. 2012 by Merilee.
Sedona, Arizona
March 19,2012
It has been snowing in Sedona since Saturday. Yes, a freak spring snow storm. We got out early believing the weather channels forecast of clearing skies around 9am. Well it did not clear off and just kept snowing. Tramped through 6 inches of the heavy wet stuff in Sedona along Schnebly Hill Road and about 2 inches along the Red Rock Loop. It was truly a winter wonderland in the desert.
the red rock cliffs where hardly visible in the snow storm.
even the prickly pear cactus got a fresh cloak of snow…

montana mountain

Queen Valley, AZ
Our trip up Montana Mountain was very scenic with the wildflowers in bloom. Although it was a bit cold and windy at the top the mountain, the view was worth the climb.
Our first attraction was Elephant Arch in Hewitt Canyon. If you look long enough and squint your eyes….
The sky was very dramatic this morning in Hewitt Canyon and the overcast cleared off.
This is the view from Montana Mountain looking south to Hackenberry Butte. The Superstition Wilderness lives up to it’s magic again.

telegraph canyon

Our jeep friends took a ride on Telegraph Canyon Road and a side trip to Flat Tire Canyon. The desert canyon landscapes where outstanding with the desert wildflower bloom just beginning.
We had great views of Picket Post Mountain as we drove into the canyon.
The group lines up at a “Kodak” moment to admire the panoramic views.
This is a pic of the Flat Tire Canyon Road as it winds down into the canyon. Yes, it is called Flat Tire for a reason. We had a flat on an uphill section of the trail. Thanks to our jeep friends, they changed the tire like an Indy pit crew.

south of the gila

We followed Steve and Jayne on a spectacular desert ride that Steve calls “South of the Gila.” The lush mountain desert landscapes were jaw dropping in every direction. The wildflowers are making an early appearance this year.
We stopped to see the Gila River.
The rocky desert around North and South Buttes was just beautiful with large saguaros and desert greenery.
We stopped to see the old railroad bridge that crosses the Gila River and goes into a tunnel on the other side of the river.
Thanks again to Steve and Jayne for sharing this beauty with us.

renaissance festival

Gold Canyon, AZ
Looking for a unique getaway? How about a trip back in time?
Escape to the Renaissance Festival where pleasure and celebration are the only orders of the day as decreed by the King!
The Renaissance Festival is one of the largest of the Renaissance events in the nation because it is really five Festivals all rolled into a giant, costumed fantasy village.
My favorite event was the jousting competition. The flash of colors and the strong horses charging were a rush of adrenaline.
This is Sir Edgemont posing for the crowd.
The costumed players set a beautiful table.
The festival had many artisans demonstrating their crafts. The glass blower was just amazing to watch the glass take shape.
Many entertainers were on the stages and this is Pirate Shantyman and Bonnie Lass. A good time was had by all.

Our group ride into Walnut Canyon was a photographers dream. The beautiful Senoran desert scenes had gorgeous back drops of red buttes all along the trail. Many wildflowers have started to bloom along the hillsides.
We spotted a desert big horn sheep up on canyon wall. Could not get a pic so captured the crowd.
The trail displayed a forest of huge saguaro cactus.
the jeeps love to get wet in the Gila River where we stopped for lunch.
the canyon walls on our way out of walnut canyon.
