wandering the lost canyons

Vicksburg and Winfield, Colorado

August 9,2013

From our base camp in Buena Vista,  we headed up CR 390 to Clear Creek Canyon.  The ride along this bumpy wash-board road is amazing as one is surrounded by fourteeners : Mountains Oxford, Belford, Missouri and Huron. The mountain peaks reaching these elevations above 14,000 ft is a sight and are only three or so miles south of Clear Creek Rd.

The ghost town of Vicksburg has some preserved historical building and mining equipment. It was an active mining town in the 1880’s.  The town had more that 40 buildings by 1882.  Here is one of the log cabins with a wooden wagon left behind.

Further down the road, we explored the ghost town of Winfield.  The town had a population of 1,500 in the 1880’s.  This is Ball cabin in the town.  It is representative of the many cabins in town during the silver era from 1870 -1915.

We further explored Lost Canyon Road up to Lennie’s Overlook at 12,000 feet.  This is the remains of Lenny’s cabin.  The view from here was a panoramic 360 degrees with views into Twin Lakes.  We enjoyed lunch here until the thunder rolled in with threatening clouds.

Pomeroy Lake

Romley, Colorado

July 30, 2013

The drive up to Pomeroy Lake was filled with scenic mountain vistas and old abandoned mining buildings from the Mary Murphy Mine.  While the mine prospered from 1870, it was closed down in 1926.

The is a view of the Ridge at 12,351 feet as we climbed to the lakes.

At the end of the trail, we took a short hike to Lower Pomeroy Lake.

Mount Princeton

Nathrop, Colorado

July 29, 2013

The short 5.4 mile ride up C.R 322 to Mount Princeton took us to 12,150 ft of elevation and we were rewarded with 360 degree majestic views.  The last section of the trail was a very narrow shelf road with steep drops that crosses the face of the mountain.

The trail ended with little hike to the peak of Mount Princeton.

tin cup pass to cottonwood pass

Buena Vista, Colorado

July 27, 2013

Driving from the old ghost town of St Elmo to the Continental Divide near Tin Cup Pass was an amazing ride.  A view looking back from Tin Cup Pass with a beautiful range of mountains in the San Isabel National Forest.  The road is visible in the middle of the image.

The air at 12,142 ft is a little thin but the scenery is jaw dropping with dozens of different alpine tundra wildflowers in bloom.

Our last stop was Cottonwood Pass at 12,142 ft elevation.  The rain and lightning where closing in fast.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

July16,2013

Nestled against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Great Sand Dunes are the focal point of a wild natural system of high mountain peaks, sparkling streams, forceful winds, and billion of sand grains. Here the majestic scenery gives intimate glimpses of life’s rich complexity.

These high dunes – North America’s tallest- are about 11 percent of 330 square mile deposit of sand. I hiked up to the dunes to snap this pic.  There are no trails here so one just wanders with the natural contours of the ever-changing dunes.

We drove the amazing Medano Pass Primitive Road up to the closed gate by Castle Creek.  The pass was washed out by two strong storms that passed through the area last week.  Here is a view from the road looking at the dunes and Sangre De Cristo Mountains.  The road is deep sand and the signs posted warn you to air down your tires or get stuck!

We had lunch at Castle Creek.  The kids love to sand ski and sand sled these smaller slopes.

The jeep before we aired down by the dunes.  Brad was smiling at the natural beauty and challenging jeep drive on this primitive road.  Hope to come back and run the full 20 miles when the road re-opens.  This natural park certainly had a unique beauty that surprised us both.

Wildflower Capital of Colorado

Crested Butte, Colorado

July 9, 2013

Every year Crested Butte hosts a Wildflower Festival.  I enjoyed attending two session lead by professional photographers out in the beautiful fields of the area.

This is a view of Gothic Mountain with a field of lupines and aspen daisies.

Snowmass peaks with bright red paintbrushes in the foreground.  Both of these images where taken with the help of Michael Grasseschi from Jackson Hole, Wyoming.  He is a great teacher of the art of landscapes.  Thank-you Michael.  If you ever get a chance to see this amazing area during the wildflower riot, do not miss it.  More about the festival at https://www.crestedbuttewildflowerfestival.com/.
